Marine Corps League Detachment 918 Barefoot Bay, FL
Author Mike Flynn continues to share his creative talent with a sincere tribute to the leadership of Past Commandant John ("JJ") Burton.
* A MAJOR MARINE *
This man of honor is nick-named "JJ'
and as a Marine is conducting a day.
He was a Captain at D.I. school
where he taught them to growl while remaining quite cool.
Squeel as they would, he'd push them for more:
they must surpass or were shown out-the-door.
Life can't be simple when you train a Marine
the lessons are clear: make 'em lean, make 'em mean.
"Mean" not meant is a nasty way
but gathering respect throughout the day.
When the D.I. is finished his recruits are a tool,
he builds a Marine so shaped and so cool.
The D.I.s are shaping our children's lives
and getting them ready to fight in a war.
D.I. training has led them along:
God bless, do it right, then do it some more.
When the D.I. is finished training recruits
he is, then aware, of the men they've become.
As children they were of games and of fun
but now, as Marines, they are the "ONE".
So many thanks to John J. Burton
for doing what he has done.
Maybe someday they will belong
to the likes of "918" for fun.
